THE SHERIFF 01:15
2.
The world falls into endless strife. Leaders fall for rumors and lies. How can people be content with life living on the edge of a knife? Total nuclear assault. It only took one man to give the order, a few to push the buttons. Millions of us die. We all deal with the destruction. A landscape changed, geographic decimation. No animal spared, mutated by radiation. Run to your graves. Run to your doom. Unmarked graves abound. Total nuclear assault, and it’s all their fault. They bought guns for protection, but a missile’s just a weapon. Total nuclear assault. Look at what you bought. You went to war to protect this land, now it’s a landfill of rot. TNA: Total decimation. Nuclear annihilation. Assault on all creation.

Out of the town and into the wastes. I’ve been dreaming of this for days. The voice in my head has one: convinced me to steal the sheriff’s gun. The headaches, the compulsions, the inability to function all gone in a matter of time now that I’ve committed the crime. The sheriff and his elders built the town from a shelter. To some it’s become a haven, to me it’s always felt like prison. The sheriff kept us docile by controlling our fear. The threat of execution always hung in the air. No more will he have his say. No more hard work, low pay. No more being controlled by fear. No more home for me here. Into the unknown. Into the waste. The voice in my head: my only leadership. I revoke my citizenship. The goddamned sheriff, no longer my protector. I am fleeing my oppressors.
4.
I open the hatch and look down. Is this salvation found? I look over my shoulder, see the posse getting closer. Do I trust where I’ve been lead, or try to run instead? I’ve got to decide, or my life will be over. “Either way, I’ll be in the dark.” I see the gang’s thoughts as they stare into the dark. One by one they’ll descend, till there’s just two, her and him. She’ll say, “Pappa I don’t know. There are terrors there below.” He’ll say, “It’s what we gotta do. If justice doesn’t get him, it might get you. So, we do what we must. I know our town is not much more than dust, but that dirt is all we have. So, we gotta go and get his ass.” This makes up my mind. Gotta make myself hard to fine. I start down the ladder as the gang closes in faster. Darkness I like being drunk. I slip from the middle rung. Laying flat on my back I hear them plan their attack. One by one they come. The chase has just begun. One by one they come slipping into the silo. The coolness familiar, my eyes adjust to the dark. As I slip deeper, I’m reminded of where I’m from.
5.
Born buried in a concrete tomb, all alone, just father and me. I created friends to talk and play with. Friends who would never leave. Make believe friends, make believe world. Cannot leave father. Cannot leave his world. Then a man, not of my making, cloaked in red showed me things. He showed me the world beyond my bunker. So bright and full, it made me think. “Why can’t we leave? Why are we alone? What happened to my mother? Why is this all I’ve ever known?” Father must have heard my questions. They fill him with anger. “You want your mother? Well, you can join her.” I felt a punch to my head, a kick to the guts. The man in red points to a knife on the floor. I can barely see through the pain as the man in red points to the door. So I grabbed the knife. I took my father’s life. I open the door to the waist and step into the light. Follow the words of my hooded friend. I open my eyes. I am in darkness again.
6.
I snap back to the silo. Gotta keep my head on my shoulders. How much further should I go? Above my head they draw closer. Nowhere left to run, I travel further underground. Further than I want to go. What means me more harm, the unknown or known? I take my chances further down. What dangers could lie this far underground? I hit a landing. Lights, above my head. The light is white. The room is red. In front of me is a door. Behind it, something’s alive. I can hear it screaming. What down here could survive? “Oh god, there’s something at the door.” Enemies above, death below.

WHISPERS 00:59
8.
The doors open and I am filled with dread at the sight of the giant rat heads. Slashing grabbing claws from out of a nightmare, dozens of red eyes that shouldn’t be here. All the ancient blood dried on the floor, I shouldn’t have come here, I shouldn’t have opened the door. Drooling maws, dagger like teeth, moving as one they inch closer to me. Then a light parting the creatures. Behind them a man, I recognize his features. Into the room he beckons me to him. I am reunited with my childhood friend. I move past the beasts, all fear gone. He draws me in, speaks in my ear. “Do you remember back in the bunker? I came to save you from your father. When you needed me, I was there. Now I need you.” Behind me the posse arrives. I can hear their surprise at the rats biting and slashing. How many will survive? My friend draws my attention away, tells me of a game we’ll play, where I’ll press these little buttons and the world will detonate. He saw the end of the world. It was glorious. Now the world must end again. He needs my trust. The door slams behind us. Just two made it out. The sheriff and his daughter. This is surly fate. Delivered to me, my lives to take. “Raise the gun. Take aim. Pull back the hammer. Squeeze the trigger.” Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.
9.
I can’t believe it the gun was a lie. The sheriff has the upper hand one more time. I throw the gun in a fit of frustration. Now it is time for the sheriff to die. I lunge for his throat with the hands of my father. He hits my nose as I grab at his collar. I attack again without hesitation. He may be old but he’s bigger and stronger. I see the white of bone, the glint of steel. It’s the knife I once used to kill. I dive for it with greedy hands. Now I’ve got my plan. I’ll end it here and now; I’m going to kill this man. I slash. I stab. I lash out like the beast I am. He bleeds. Bleeds out. He dies like the victim he is. My attention turns back to the buttons, nothing in my way. Then a noise coming from behind. My head explodes in pain. She got me. Dying I am, but if I die, who completes the plan? Despite the pain, despite the confusion, despite the pleas of the deputy, I still push the button. No lesson learned; no morals earned. Civilization dies as the world turns.
